Be Still Devotional: Day 1

Devotion for Monday February 10th
by Chris DeArman | Bellaire Campus Pastor
Scripture
Isaiah 41:10
Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
Devotional Thought
On February 9, 1991, a new character was introduced on Saturday Night Live: Stuart Smalley. Played by Al Franken, the sketch featured Stuart hosting a show called “Daily Affirmations with Stuart Smalley.” In each sketch, he said these now famous words: “I’m good enough, I’m smart enough, and doggone it, people like me!”
When Stuart found himself fearful, uncertain, nervous, or doubting himself, he would look himself in the mirror and preach to himself these famous words. It really is funny. And helpful!
Stuart teaches us a good practice. We need to preach to ourselves. One verse that comes to mind is today’s verse, Isaiah 41:10. Isaiah the Prophet is relaying a promise from God to His people. God says to those He loves, “When you find yourself in places that are dangerous or in situations that are difficult, when you look up and notice that uncertainty is all around you, when you can’t see the next step or where to turn, know this: fear not. I am with you. You don’t have to be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, help you, and uphold you.”
So, the next time you’re in a bind, a tough spot, an uncertain place, full of fear, in need, or in desperation, preach to yourself like Stuart Smalley. Preach to yourself the words of Isaiah 41:10.
Reflection questions
Suggested prayer/action step
Schedule at least two "Preach to Yourself" times in your phone for the next week. Preach and pray the words of Isaiah 41:10.
