Be Still Devotional: Day 18

Scripture
Psalm 62:5-6
For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him. He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken.

Devotional Thought
All good comes from God. Regardless of the circumstances, full dependence starts with “my soul, wait in silence” (v. 5). Matthew Henry explains that this means our soul “says nothing against what He does, but quietly expects what He will do.” The declaration that follows is “I cannot be moved.”

In 2010, I found myself unexpectedly out of work for over a year. Stabilizing our family of five, keeping our house, feeding us, and not dying from exhaustion became my priorities. I was angry at God at first but slowly began to figure out how to wait on Him even in that desert. During that season, I drank in the words of John Waller’s song “While I’m Waiting.”

I'm waiting, I'm waiting on You, Lord
And I am hopeful, I'm waiting on You, Lord
Though it is painful, but patiently I will wait
And I will move ahead, bold and confident
Taking every step in obedience
While I'm waiting, I will serve You
While I'm waiting, I will worship
While I'm waiting, I will not faint
I'll be running the race even while I wait

Looking back, the journey has not been short or easy, but I can confidently declare that “He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be moved.”

Father, You alone can fully provide what I need and validate me for this life and Your service. Help me to wait on You in a way that honors You and grows my faith. I trust You, Lord! Amen.
