Be Still Devotional: Day 28

Devotion for Wednesday March 19
Jennifer Dennis | Kids Executive Director
Scripture
Zechariah 4:6b
Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the LORD of hosts.
Devotional Thought
My husband and I have been discussing our 2025 “word of the year.” Each year, we try and choose a word to be the theme or challenge for that year. Some past examples are “trust” and “faith.” One year, I wanted to know if I could do hard things, so I chose “hard.” (I will never do that again; it was a terribly hard year.) This year, I have considered words like “faithfulness,” “discipline,” and even “shenanigans.” None of those seemed right, until I was reminded of today’s verse in Zechariah.
My word of the year is “Spirit.”
Impatience, anxiety, and doubt often drown out the still, small voice of God hidden in my heart. I fear, especially as a full-grown adult, that I tend to depend on my strength, will, and power. But to stay attuned to God’s Spirit, His constant companionship sent especially for us, what an incredible gift! It is time to quiet the focus away from my power and tap into His. This year, I hope to better depend on God’s Spirit. I hope to be more sensitive to His guidance and encouragement.
I will revisit my word often (and even tell it people who were expecting it to be “discipline”). The more I discern His Spirit, the more I will see His power and grace. I am excited for a year fixed on the Spirit of God.
Reflection Questions
Suggested prayer/action step
Plan to study Bible verses about God’s Spirit to better listen and discern God’s voice.

- Are you giving God the space to answer your prayers by His power?
- How do you limit God by depending on your strength and power to accomplish His works?
