Be Still Devotional: Day 29

Devotion for Thursday March 20
Justo Robinson | Missouri City Español Pastor

Scripture
Psalm 25:4-5
“Make me to know your ways, O LORD; teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long.”

Devotional Thought
In Psalm 24: 4-5, David needs to know what God would have him do. Earlier, in verse 2b, he expresses that he is concerned about “his enemies.” He is at a crossroads, and he needs to know the ways and paths of God.

I’m reminded of a famous pastor who found himself at a crossroads. Martyn Lloyd Jones was born in Cardiff, Wales on December 20, 1899. Once he started to attend school, he was greatly influenced by his teacher who awakened his interest in history and mathematics. Upon his completion of grade school, he decided to be a doctor, for which he started studying at Saint Bartholmew’s Hospital. He recounts that, next to home and the hospital, the most important thing in his life was Charing Cross Chapel, where he would attend with his family on Sundays. Once he completed his medical training and started to practice, he was a very successful physician. Despite being a faithful congregant and one who thought that he was a Christian, he found out on a Sunday morning that he wasn’t. According to him, “What I needed was preaching that would convict me of sin and make me see my need and bring me to repentance and tell me something about regeneration. The preaching we always had was always based on the assumption that we were all Christians, that we would not have been there in the congregation unless we were Christians.”  That day, he decided to turn his life over to the Lord, and in the next few weeks he had made up his mind about his future. To the surprise of his colleagues and friends, he announced that God was calling him to become a preacher.

Reflection Questions
Martyn Lloyd Jones had two major decisions to make: he had to decide to (1) turn his life over to God and (2) abandon his medical career to serve God as a preacher.
  • What decisions are you struggling with now? Are you a believer?
  • Are you serving Him faithfully?

Suggested prayer/action step
Pray and ask God to show you His ways because He is the God of your salvation.
